    Race Review:

    A week after Michele Alboreto's unexpected win in Detroit the F1 teams were in action again in Montréal with the RAM Automotive team having reappeared with a car for Gilles Villeneuve's brother Jacques. René Arnoux was on pole again in his Ferrari with Alain Prost (Renault), Nelson Piquet (Brabham-BMW), Patrick Tambay (Ferrari), Riccardo Patrese (Brabham-BMW) and Eddie Cheever (Renault) completing the top six. The ATS-BMW continued to show well with Manfred Winkelhock seventh ahead of Andrea de Cesaris (Alfa Romeo) and the first of the normally-aspirated cars, Keke Rosberg's Williams. The top 10 was completed by Bruno Giacomelli in the Toleman-Hart.

    At the start Arnoux took off into the lead with Patrese, Prost and Piquet in pursuit. Arnoux was only briefly headed after his pit stop on lap 35 but when Patrese stopped on lap 38 Arnoux went ahead again and won by a margin of nearly 45 secs. Patrese was on course for second until his gearbox failed on lap 57 and so the place went to Cheever who go the better of Tambay during the pit stops. Tambay was third with Rosberg fourth, Prost fifth (after an extra stop because of a puncture) and John Watson (McLaren) sixth.
